Taichi resa med Lotustravel

Ofta efterlyser mina resenärer nyheter och tips om specialresor jag ska leda. Jag har en ny spännande rundresa på gång 15 - 30 maj 2009 . Resans tema är taichi/qigong och vacker natur. Lotus Travel är som vanligt researrangör och vi har en alldeles egen taichi/qigong instruktör till vårt förfogande under hela vår rundresa - Marianne Telford, bosatt i Skåne med över 20 års erfarenhet som instruktör.
Vi börjar i Beijing med givna trotjänare som Förbjudna staden, Kinesiska muren och Sommarpalatset men tittar på dessa välkända sevärdheter med nya ögon och upptäcker delar som vanliga grupper inte besöker. Vi går utanför det vanliga turistspåret och vandrar en mil på muren, besöker ett daoisttempel och tittar på nya saker som Beijing har att erbjuda så här efter OS 2008.
Efter Beijing bär det av till Chengdu, Kinas "pandahuvudstad". Här bor vi i de tibetanska kvarteren och upplever både Chengdus berömda tehuskultur, pandor och kattbjörn, Sichuan opera, tibetanskt smörte och jakgryta och kryddstark sichuanmat.
Vi fortsätter i den sichuanesiska världen bort till Leshan där vi beskådar världens största Buddha. Därefter bär det av till det heliga buddhistberget Emei där vi tillsammans med andra besökare och pilgrimer går på stigar mellan bambudunge, paviljong och tempel och övernattar i enkla tempelhärbärgen. Vi tillbringar cirka tre dagar på berget och avslutar med att ta oss upp på toppen där vi får se om vi kan skåda enda bort till dem tibetanska bergen i västra Sichuan.
Efter dessa enkla dagar i buddhisms värld och tempelprakt flyger vi till Guilin där vi åker flodbåt på det sagolika Lifloden och sedan bor ett par nätter i mysiga Yangshuo. På dagen cyklar vi bland risfält och sockerstoppsberg och besöker små byar och bondefamiljer.
Efter Yangshuo bär det av igen tillbaka till Beijing för en sista dag som brukar ägnas åt shopping!
Och självklart, varje dag har vi gedigen undervisning i taichi och qigong, nivå nybörjare, så alla är välkomna. De som inte vill delta i undervisningen kan erbjudas annat under tiden. Då vi kommer att gå väldigt mycket under resan förutsätts god kondition av alla deltagare.

Bookworm Literary Festival 2009

  
Just found out that the Bookworm's 2009 Literary Festival is on track for March. Last year was a ripping success and really livened up the cold winter here in Chengdu. We all felt that a little bit of the "World" came to Chengdu and it was all very exciting. At the same time the authors seemed to think that Chengdu was exotic and interesting too!

Don't know all the details yet but I do know that some of my  favorite authors are coming: cookbook author extraordinaire Fuschia Dunlop (Sichuan Cookery, Revolutionary Chinese Cookbook), Ian Buruma (The China Lover), Blake Morrison (When Did You Last See Your Father?, Things My Mother Never Told Me). The Bookworm is located in three Chinese cities: Beijing, Suzhou and of course Chengdu so if you are in any of these locales at the time you have the opportunity to partake in any number of exciting events. I'm already saving up money to buy Fuschia's latest book Shark's Fin and Sichuan Pepper, a sweet-sour memoir of eating in China. She is not only one of the world's experts on Chinese cooking but also a great artist, look at her fantastic China journal drawings on her website.

Last year I mediated for Qiu Xiaolong, author of the award-winning Inspector Chen series of mystery novels. More about him in a later blog (his sixth book is already out in French, La Danseuse de Mao. It is coming out in English in March with the title The Mao Case, supposed to be his best book yet.)

A couple of weeks ago we had the wonderful opportunity to witness how traditional Japanese woodblock printing was done by one of the best, artist Ralph Kiggell. Ralph is an old friend from Hong Kong days where we used to work together in publishing. For several years now he has concentrated on perfecting his technique as a printer and artist. He has studied with numerous Japanese printmasters and today creates the most wonderful images: industrial landscapes of advertising hoardings, power lines, water towers and cityscapes; but also ferns, bracken, lotus flowers and pagodas. I love his pairings of pagodas, water towers and chimney stacks. The colors are absolutely wonderful and the shapes swirling, bold and fluid. The subjects are mostly set in Asia and coincide very much with subjects that I am fascinated with in photography - industrial landscapes, iconic cultural images and details. He also does book illustrations - the most superb being "Leading the Cranes Home", illustrations of orientalist Arthur Waley's translations of Chinese poems. (The Old Stile Press. ISBN 0907664). 

We visited him in his studio in Bangkok and he showed Emy (9 yrs) and Burton (11 yrs)  how to make a print. He then let Burton have a go himself. Burton quickly drew a gecko on a piece of rubber tree wood and then cut out (with Ralph's help) the image, inked it and then printed it by rubbing a "baren" over the paper that had been placed on the block. It was all finished by simply peeling off the finished print from the wood. The experience for all of us was wonderfully rewarding.

Kinakunskap

När vi väl är inne på böcker om Kina, dess historia och kultur är det lika bra att även nämna författaren Björn Kjellgrens förträffliga "handbok" om Kinas kultur och samhälle, Kinakunskap (ISBN 9144014457) som gavs ut år 2000 på Studentlitteratur. Fast den har några år på nacken håller den fortfarande och borde absolut finnas med som basbok i varje kinaintresserades bibliotek.

Nya realiaböcker om Kina

 

  
Gleerup förlag har en ny serie fina realiaböcker om Kinas historia, samhälle och kulturtraditioner ämnade för svenska gymnasieelever. Jag har agerat bildredaktör för serien som jag varmt rekommenderar. De första två titlarna har nyligen kommit ut och jag bifogar här en beskrivning från förlagets webbsida. Kina - äldre historia är skriven av Björn Kjellgren.

Boken tar upp äldre kinesisk historia fram till kejsardömets fall 1912. Här kan man bland annat läsa om hur Kina blev Kina, om vetenskap och utbildning i kejsardömet och om hur och varför kejsardömet till slut föll.

Boken täcker i princip 1900-talets historia. Den handlar om kampen mellan nationalister och kommunister, om Kina och Japan och om folkrepubliken under Mao. Boken avslutas med det post-maoistiska Kina.

Kina - Kultur och tradition, Björn Kjellgren

Boken börjar med att diskutera vad som skulle kunna kallas ”kinesisk kultur”. Boken går sedan igenom de tre lärorna: konfucianism, daoism och buddhism och de kinesiska traditioner som är förknippade med dem. Slutligen berättar boken om viktiga företeelser som mat och dryck, fester och folknöjen – både gamla och nya.

Thai massage

Yesterday I was treated to a Full Body Scrub and Aroma Therapy Massage at the Healthland Spa, Sathorn in Bangkok. Wow, never had a massage like that. I have to admit that I've been a little bit of a wimp all of my massage life, sticking mostly to bone-cracking - but oh so good - Chinese foot massage and wonderful head massages at the hairdressers. Never really dared do the all out thing. But now I'm hooked. And thoroughly clean.

I live in an apartment complex with lots of different people and nationalities, good neighbors mostly, especially after the earthquake in May last year. Among the more colorful are the many Tibetans both from the TAR itself and from Western Sichuan. Usually you can see where they live from the balconies sporting prayer flags, meditation cushions and hanging meat. And by the yak doodle in our elevator, scrapped into the metal door.
